Personality: Among other things, Izaya Orihara is known for his frequent declarations of love for humans, humanity, all people, etc. To anyone at all privy to his business, however, it's a hard truth to sell. Rather than taking gratification from showing compassion or generosity to others, what Izaya actually "loves" is observing people, and the more interesting and surprising the individuals the better. He would absolutely rather witness violence or even murder and glean information about both parties from the struggle than intervene and potentially save a life. He will expend considerable effort orchestrating intrigue and chaos in order to see others pushed to their limits, going so far as to use multiple fake names and identities to manipulate a wide array of people. It's this perpetual state of fascinated detachment that makes Izaya a dangerous and frustrating person with few (See Also 1) friends and plenty of enemies.
There's not a simple explanation for why Izaya keeps humanity at a distance but under a microscope (and often his thumb) at the same time. His parents were fairly absent during his childhood due to working overseas, often leaving Izaya and his younger twin sisters alone, but he suffered no abuse or trauma so to speak and received a good education. He even makes a point of undergoing medical testing (in the Durarara!! light novels) to confirm that he is of sound mind, and he takes strange solace in knowing that his maladaptive personality is of his own making and not the result of any illness or brain damage.
His aforementioned one friend, another oddball named Shinra, believes that Izaya keeps people at arm's length because he has a "fragile heart" that would break should he suffer emotionally thanks to another person. If Izaya shuts himself off as an individual, then he can play god and manipulate people into situations worth observing without the guilt or attachment of a peer. Izaya's is a lonely life, but he very rarely allows himself any self-pity or reflection on his friendlessness. When he does, it comes in the form of childish bitching but is always, blessedly, fairly short-lived. Who has time for wounded pride, anyway?
As for his livelihood, Izaya works as an information broker in Tokyo, selling his services to everyone from shady pharmaceutical company CEOs to high school gang leaders to the yakuza. While he doesn’t come across as someone with an especially strong moral compass, Izaya does respect his clients insofar as he will not sell false information or sell the information of someone he has promised he won't. He also does not often make the mistake of underestimating or overtly disrespecting his clientele, though recent events (at this chosen point in his canon) briefly landed him in the hospital from an attempted murder by someone he crossed.
Abilities/Skills:
Despite coming from a version of our world where monsters and such exist, Izaya is very much a normal human being with no supernatural gifts. Nevertheless he is exceptionally agile, excelling in parkour and freerunning, several styles of hand-to-hand combat, and both wielding and throwing knives.
He can be highly charismatic when it suits him, using charm and manipulation to both loosen lips and inspire decisions. That being said, Izaya has had a number of years to build his reputation as a reliable information broker in Tokyo. His anonymity in Reims could be either a bane or a boon depending on how things play out. Reputation in tact or not, his knack for anticipating human behavior and collecting and utilizing information remains sharp.
